snakes and lizards are placed in the same class, though they are very different. Why?

first difference :
the legs of the lizards are visible while snakes do not have legs
second difference :
lizards move with their four limbs but snakes move by undulating its body with the help of its ventral scale.
third difference:
lizards can hear through external ear openings but snakes hear with the help of their skull bones.
