SO2 act as both oxi.and red. agent but SO4 act as only oxi agent.Why ?

S in SO2 in +4 oxn. state but +6 in SO4. so, the letter is in it's maximum oxn. state, that's why it behaves as oxidising agent

so2 can still be oxi and red

but SO4 S +6 is maximum oxidation state of sulfur
