Society of the later Vedic period underwent a sea of changes. Caste-system crawled into it. The women lost their earlier rights and came to be relegated and neglected. Society became complex and underwent many changes. The caste system was unknown during the Rig Vedic age. But it made its appearance in the later Vedic period and continued to grow complex. Four specific castes made their appearance in society. The Brahmin caste was the foremost. Among his principal occupations were study of the Vedas, performing Yajna and ceremonies like coronation and receiving donations. The Kshatriya caste came next. War, conquest, protection and defense of kingdom and a sound administration of the state were the principal look-out of this caste. The third caste was the Vaisya and people of this caste were engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, trade and business.
The last caste was the Sudra and its members were exclusively to serve the other three castes. The sudras were untouchable. This system of untouchability emerged as a despicable taboo in the later Vedic society and even became hereditary. In fact the entire-caste system became hereditary.
