Answer:

Although traditional medical models of chronic illness and disability (CID) regard impairment and disability as fixed in an individual's body or mind, current social models of CID argue that the experience of disability is imposed on people with CID by a society that creates barriers to equality. Therefore, the hard (e.g., inaccessibility of the physical surroundings) and soft (e.g., attitudinal barriers) factors in the environment play a significant role as barriers or facilitators in affecting the psychosocial adjustment of people with CID. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of theories, research, and applications related to attitudes toward people with CID, attitude measurements, and attitude change strategies and to discuss ways how rehabilitation health professionals can take attitudinal factors into account in formulating working hypotheses about psychosocial adjustment and designing psychosocial interventions for people with CID.
