Answer:

For what we know of our past it appears there have been small groups of people isolated by geography and time that have taken leaps forward toward more enlightened ways of existing. The value of a life increased.

One such example is the Hindu region of India. The people here were isolated do to geography for a great number of years. The things going on in the rest of the world did not happen there. As a result instead of focusing energy into defending or conquering, the focus became the human condition. The inner workings of humanity and life. The influence of these peoples understandings can still be seen in the culture of not just India but the entirety of Asia and spreading west.

Much of the discoveries and understanding of these ancient people is still not understood by modern science.

The society that respects all life and lives within the natural limits of our world would be the most civilized. The entire human population is moving in this direction. No country has made much more headway than another. There are certainly some countries bringing up the rear. They have more to do to catch up.
