Since, sodium is more reactive as compared to carbon, hence, it has more affinity towards oxygen.
This is the reason that it is impossible to obtain sodium in the form of sodium oxide.
For instance, if you react iron with carbon, then the affinity for the oxygen will be lower due to the rate of reactivity of iron.
Hence it is easy to obtain it in a pure state.
