this refers that sugar is soluble in water as the intermolecular spaces of a liquid here water are very large and can hence accomodate and bind the sugar molecules within them through chemical bonds.

This indicates that matter has intermolecular space in between the particles.
Water which is matter, has intermolecular spaces between its particles.
When sugar is added to water then this sugar goes into those spaces.After some time you will observe that there is no sugar visible .
