Sodium metal cannot be obtained by the electrolysis of their aqueous solutions because the metal deposited at the cathode reacts at once with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
Thus at the cathode , metals are not liberated or deposited instead hydrogen gas is obtained.
