Sodium reacts with water vigorously to liberate hydrogen gas

The remaining solution is NaOH

Na+H2O ----------- H2+NaOH

The reaction is highly exothermic.

The heat produced is enough to ignite the hydrogen produced

Thus sodium fizzes on surface of water
