<p>
Sodium is a highly reactive metal. and it reacts vigrously when coming in contact with air. sodium reacts with oxygen and form sodium oxide and reacts with carbon dioxide to form sodium hydrogen Carbonate. sodium can be immersed in nitrogen too.. nitrogen won't react with it. but basically it's kept in kerosene oil. we can't keep in water as it can react and catch fire. it usually floats on the top of water as it's lighter and keep on burning. alcohols are also reactive with sodium. but kerosene is a cheap and inorganic oil and also a non-reactive oil. hence, kerosene is a good choice for keeping sodium in it.
</p>
