Answer:
There isn’t some specific term that is use to mean exactly “the combination of hardware and software”. Absolutely every term in use would be ambiguous. This looks like one of the 3 items that always seem to be left at the end of matching a list of terms to a list of their definitions. They invariably get thrown at students in the first week of class. They show up on a test so that you can prove you showed up for class and took notes.
Other people have suggested “solution” and “firmware”. For all I know, one of those is the answer your professor is looking for. I have no idea which. I use both of those terms regularly, and I don’t use them to mean “the combination of hardware and software”. I’m currently involved in a firmware project and I consider the firmware to be distinct from the hardware. I refer to it as software most of the time instead of firmware. As it has become easier to install and update firmware on embedded hardware, the distinction between those terms has become fuzzier. And as for “solution”, that term is used often enough for just software that you’d have to be careful with it too.
My best guess is that “system” is the word you’re looking for. But again, that is used more narrowly for just software in some contexts. It’s also used more broadly for bigger systems that may involve multiple computers or even non-computer hardware.
