Soil may retain water in them. what helps in retaining water in the soil ?

The soil's ability to hold water depends on the size of its particles. Sandy soils have coarse particles so they have low water and nutrient holding capacities. They have good drainage.

Clay soil has the highest water holding capacity. Water molecules hold more tightly to the fine clay particles.
