Solids sink in water as the density of solid is more than that of the liquid
but
ice is an exception , as molecules of ice are much apart due to orientation of hydrogen bonds . So, density of ice is less than that of water . Hence , ice floats on water .

Ice has cage like structure due to formation of intermolecular hydrogen bond... So, it has less density..
That's why solid ice floats on the surface of liquid water...
