This is due to the hydroxyl group in thealcohol which is able to form hydrogen bons with water molecules. Alcoholswith a smaller hydrocarbon chain are very soluble. As the length of the hydrocarbon chain increases, thesolubility in water decreases.

more the molecular mass means more chains and more hydroxyl groups... so when there are long chains, it is easy to break the bond rather than the small chains
therefore, the longer chains with more molecular mass easily dissolve in water thus breaking its bonds
