this is the pH of a solution by mixing 50 ml of 0.4N HCL and 50 ml 0.2 N NaOH? ... When 100 ml of 1 N sulfuric acid is mixed with 100 ml of 1 M sodium hydroxide, what will be the nature of the the mixture? If 0.1 M HNO3 (100ml) 0.2 M H2SO4 (200ml) and 0.1 M NaOH (100ml) are mixed

H2SO4 + 2 NaOH →. Na2SO4 + 2 H2O

Observe that 2 moles of NaOH are required to neutralize one (1) mole of H2SO4.

So what do we have to work with?

O.100 L H2SO4 x 0.2 moles/ L = 0.02 moles H2SO4

0.100 L NaOH x 0.2 moles/ L = 0.02 moles NaOH

Therefore the 0.02 moles of NaOH will neutralize 0.01 moles H2SO4.

This leaves 0.01 moles of H2SO4 in 0.2 L of solution.

We want to know the Normality of the solution after the reaction.

0.01 moles H2SO4 /0.200 L = x moles / one (1) L. x = 0.05 moles / L

Since H2SO4 is dibasic there are 2 equivalents per mole. Therefore the solution has 0.05 x 2 = 0.1 equivalents per L which is 0.1 Normal.
