From the given quadratic equation a= 1 ,b=1,c= -2

alpha= - b+√(b²-4ac) whole by 2a

beta = - b-√( b²-4ac) whole by 2a

:. alpha - beta = √( b²-4ac) /a

= √(1+8)/1

=√9

= 3
