x-4=4y-16

2nd case;
after 6yrs;
mother's age=x+6
daughter age =y+6

according to the question

x+6=(y+6)×3/2
x+6=3(y+6)/2
x+6=3y+18/2
2(x+6)=3y+18
2x+12=3y+18
2(4y-12)+12=3y+18....from (1)
8y-24+12=3y+18
8y-12-3y-18= 0
5y-30=0
5y=30
y=6yrs

therefore...
daughter age =6years
mothers age =x=4y-12
4(6)-12
=12years
