What is the answer of (√5-2) (√5+2)?

Answer is 1

It’s the difference of two squares:

x^2 - y^2

= (x)^2 - (y)^2

= (x+y)(x-y)

in this case x is root 5 and y is 2. If you work backwards from the above generic solution you get

(root 5)^2 - (2)^2

= 5 - 4

= 1

If you don’t recognise that it’s a difference of two squares you can just multiply it out as normal in this format:

(x+y)(x-y)

= x(x-y) + y(x-y)

= x^2 - xy + xy - y^2

= x^2 - y^2

where

x = root 5

y = 2
