In the tincture of iodine, the solute is iodine and the solvent is alcohol( ethyl alcohol) and water.

  • Solute refers to the substance that gets dissolved in a medium whereas solvent refers to the medium in which it is dissolved.Together, they form a solution.
  • Tincture of iodine is referred to as a weak iodine solution.
  • Tincture of iodine is prepared by dissolving sodium iodide/potassium iodide in a mixture of distilled water and alcohol. It is therefore referred to as an alcoholic solution.
  • It is used as an antiseptic for cuts or wounds. Also, it can be used for superficial skin infections.
