 \frac{1}{2}  + 3x = 5

subtract \:  \frac{1}{2} on \: both \: sides

 \frac{1}{2}  + 3x -  \frac{1}{2}  = 5 -  \frac{1}{2}

3x =  \frac{10 - 1}{2}

3x =  \frac{9}{2}

divide \: 3 \: on \: both \: sides

 \frac{ \cancel3x}{ \cancel3}  =  \frac{ {}^{ 3}  \cancel9}{ 2}  \times  \frac{1}{ \cancel3}

x =  \frac{3}{2}

x = 1.5
