2x + y = 7                                                  =>  2x + y = 7       --------- (1.)

x + 2y = 8   ------------->    multiply by 2   =>  2x + 4y = 16    ---------(2.)

Subtracting (1.) from (2.)  =>  4y - y = 16 - 7  

                                        =>  3y = 9  

                                        =>  y = 3

put   y = 3   in (1.) =>  2x + 3 = 7

                            =>  2x = 4

                            =>   x = 2

Now, put y = 3 and x = 2 in y = mx + 3

                                         =>  3 = 2m + 3

                                         =>  2m = 0

                                         =>  m = 0

 .: y = 3
