2x2-13x-12=0

Two solutions were found :

x =(13-√265)/4=-0.820

x =(13+√265)/4= 7.320

Equation at the end of step 1 :

(2x 2 - 13x) - 12 = 0

Factoring 2x2-13x-12

The first term is, 2x2 its coefficient is 2 .

The middle term is, -13x its coefficient is -13 .

The last term, "the constant", is -12

Step-1 : Multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant 2 • -12 = -24

Step-2 : Find two factors of -24 whose sum equals the coefficient of the middle term, which is -13 .

-24 + 1 = -23

-12 + 2 = -10

-8 + 3 = -5

-6 + 4 = -2

-4 + 6 = 2

-3 + 8 = 5

-2 + 12 = 10

-1 + 24 = 23

Answer :

-7x² + 13x - 12 = 0

⇒ - (7x² - 13x + 12) = 0

⇒ 7x² - 13x + 12 = 0

On comparing the given equation with ax² + bx + c = 0, we get -

a = 7, b = - 13, c = 12

D = b² - 4ac

D = (-13)² - 4 * 7 * 12

D = 169 - 336

D = - 167

∴ D < 0

Hence, roots doesn't exist.
