Given :

  • 2x - 3y = 19
  • 3x - 2y = 21

Find :

We have to find the value of x and y by elimination method.

Solution :

→ 2x - 3y = 19 ____ (eq 1)

→ 3x - 2y = 21 ____ (eq 2)

Multiply (eq 1) with 3 and (eq 2) with 2

→ 2x - 3y = 19 (×3)

→ 6x - 9y = 57 _____ (eq 3)

→ 3x - 2y = 21 (×2)

→ 6x - 4y = 42 _____ (eq 4)

• Subtract (eq 4) from (eq 23)

→ 6x - 9y - (6x - 4y) = 57 - 42

→ 6x - 9y - 6x + 4y = 15

→ - 5y = 15

→ y = - 3

Put value of y in (eq 1)

→ 2x - 3(-3) = 19

→ 2x + 9 = 19

→ 2x = 10

→ x = 5

x = 5 and y = - 3.

☆ Verification :

From above calculations we have x = 5 and y = - 3

Put value of x and y in (eq 1)

=> 2(5) - 3(-3) = 19

=> 10 + 9 = 19

=> 19 = 19

Similarly,

Put value of x and y in (eq 2)

=> 3(5) - 2(-3) = 21

=> 15 + 6 = 21

=> 21 = 21
