for \: the \: polynomial \:  {mx }^{2}  - 2x + 3 \:  \\ if \: p( - 1) = 7 \: then \: find \: m.

substitute -1 in the place of 'x'.

then ...

p(x) = p(-1)=m(-1)^2 - 2(-1) + 3 = 0

0 = m(1) + 2 +3

0= m +5

-5=m

therefore m = -5 .
