If the same number be added to the numbers 2 4 14 and 22 then the resultant numbers are in proportion. Find the number.

Let x as the number to be added,

 \frac{2 + x}{4 + x}  =  \frac{14 + x}{22 + x}  \\ (2 + x)(22 + x) = (14 + x)(4 + x) \\ 44 + 2x + 22x +  {x}^{2}  = 56 + 4x + 14x +  {x}^{2}  \\ 24x + 44 = 18x + 56 \\ 6x = 12 \\ x = 2

Therefore, 2 is the number.

\huge\underline \mathtt\red{Explanation:-}

Let the number be x.

{2 + x , 4 + x , 14 + x \:and \: 22 + x}

\frac{2 + x}{4 + x} \times \frac{14+ x}{22+ x}

{(2 + x) × (22 + x) = (4 + x) - x (14 - x)}

44 + 2x + 22x +  {x}^{2}  - {x}^{2}  = 56 - 4x + 14x + x

24x - 18 x +  {x}^{2}  = 56 - 44

6x = 12

x = \frac{12}{6}

× = \frac{2}{1}

x = 2
