Given that a car 100km travels at a speed of 60km/hr.

We know that Time  = Distance/Speed

                                   = 100/60

                                   = 5/3.

Given that car returns with a speed of 40km/hr.

We know that Time = Distance/Speed

                                  = 100/40

                                  = 5/2.

Given total distance covered = 200km/hr.

Total time is taken to cover the whole journey = (5/3) + (5/2)

                                                                               = (2 * 5 + 3 * 5)/6

                                                                               = (10 + 15)/6

                                                                               = 25/6.

Now,

The average speed of the whole journey = Total distance covered/Total time

                                                                      = 200/(25/6)

                                                                      = (200 * 6)/25

                                                                      = 1200/25

                                                                      = 48.

Therefore the average speed of the whole journey = 48km/hr.

Hope this helps!
