Taking L.C.M. of 5 and 8 = 40, we get,

= $\dfrac{23 \: \times \: 8}{40} - \dfrac{17 \: \times \: 5}{40}$

= $\dfrac{184 \: - \: 85}{40}$

= $\dfrac{99}{40}$

= $2 \dfrac{19}{40}$ is the answer.
