Given Equation:

2x + y = 5 ____ (i)

3x + 2y = 8 ____ (ii)

To Find:

The value of x and y by using substitution method.

Solution:

In eq. (i),

2x + y = 5

or, y = 5 - 2x ____ ( iii )

By substituting eq. (iii) in eq. (ii), we obtain

3x + 2 ( 5 - 2x ) = 8

or, 3x + 10 - 4x = 8

or, 3x - 4x = 8 - 10

or, -x = -2

or, x = 2 ____ ( iv )

By substituting eq. (iv) in eq. (i), we obtain

2(2) + y = 5

or, y = 5 - 4

or, y = 1

Answer:

The value of x and y is 2 and 1 respectively.
