10y + 2x = 12 ; Solve for x

In order to solve for x, we must isolate it. That just means that we need to get "x" onto its own side of the equal sign! :)

So, we must first subtract 10y from both sides.

\cancel{10\text{y}} + 2\text{x} \cancel{- 10\text{y}} = 12 - 10\text{y}

Simplify.

2x = -10y + 12

Then, we simply divide both sides by 2.

\dfrac{2\text{x}}{2} = \dfrac{(-10\text{y} + 12)}{2}

Simplify.

\text{x} = \dfrac{-10\text{y}}{2} + \dfrac{12}{2}

Simplify.

x = -5y + 6

x = 6 - 5y
