x+3y=5...................(1)                      

3x-y=5....................(2)

to eliminate x                               substitute y into (2)

(1)*3 - (2)*1                                      3x-1=5

3x+9y=15                                         3x=5+1

-3x-y=5                                           3x=6

     10y=10                                     therefore x=2

        y=1
