on adding eq. 1 and 2

4x + 3y = 48

20x - 3y = 96

24x = 144

x = 144/24

x = 6

put x in eq. 1

4x + 3y = 48

4(6) + 3y = 48

24 + 3y = 48

3y = 48 - 24

3y = 24

y = 24/3

y = 8
