Solution:

Let the present age of Shyam be;

x years.

Then,

Shyam's age 5 years later=(x+5)years

and

Shyam's age 9 years ago=(x-9) years

Now,

According to the question;

=> (x + 5) = 3(x - 9)

=> x + 5 = 3x - 27

=> 3x - x = 27 + 5

=> 2x = 32

=> x = 32/2

=> x = 16

Hence, the present age of Shyam is;

16 years.
