Question :

An electric iron of resistance 750Ω is connected across a mains supply of 220V. Calculate the current through the element and amount of heat produced in joules in 10 minutes.

Given :

Resistance of iron = 750Ω

Potential difference = 220V

Time interval = 10 min

To Find :

Current flow in iron and heat produced in the given interval of time.

Solution :

❒ As per ohm's law, current flow in conductor is directly proportional to the applied potential difference at constant temperature.

Mathematically, V = I × R

  • V denotes voltage
  • I denotes current
  • R denotes resistance

By substituting the given values;

➠ V = I × R

➠ 220 = I × 750

➠ I = 220/750

I = 0.3 1/3 A

Heat produced in 10 min :-

  • H = I² × R × t

Where,

  • I denotes current
  • R denotes resistance
  • t denotes time

Here, time = 10 min = 10 × 60 = 600s

➠ H = I² × R × t

➠ H = (1/3)² × 750 × 600

➠ H = 450,000/9

H = 50,000 J

Note : Seems like there is error in the question as i got approximate answer. Voltage across electric iron should be 250V.
