Let

l is the total length of piece of wire

l1 is as one piece

l2 is as another piece

then as per given

$l = l1 + l2$

as full piece is broke in two piece then

$\frac{7}{8} = \frac{1}{4} + l2$

to find l2

$l2 = \frac{7}{8} - \frac{1}{4}$

as base of fraction is not same hence we will take lcm.

lcm of 4 and 8 is 8. hence

$l2 = \frac{7 \times 1 - 1 \times 2}{8}$

by solving we get

$l2 = \frac{5}{8}$

hence length of another piece is 5/8m.
