there are 4 types of squares.

small size squares, medium size squares, big squares and the biggest square.

S - size squares = 4×3 + (2+2)[where corners of the red,brown and green shaped squares are intersecting] = 16

M- size squares = 4× 4( blue coloured big squares under biggest square) = 16

big squares = 3 + 3 + 3 (b/W 1st and 2nd row of big squares + 2nd -3rd row of big squares + 3rd and 4th row of big squares) = 9

biggest square = 1

total number of squares

= 16 + 16 + 9 + 1 = 42
