▶2kg of ice melts when water at 100℃ is poured in a hole drilled in a block of ice. What mass of water is used!?

Given:

Latent heat of ice, L(m) = 336\times 10^{3}J/kg

mass of ice, m= 2kg

Similarly,

specific heat of water, S= 4200j/kg/K

∆T = T1 - T2= 100 - 0 =373 - 273= 100K

let mass of water be m'...

we have both heat energies remains same!

i.e,

Q = L(w)\times m==(1)

where 'Q' is heat energy and 'L(m)' as latent heat and 'm' as a mass..

similarly,

Q = S\times m'∆T==(2)

since, energies required are same!

hence!

equating!(1)&(2)

L(w)\times m = S\times m'∆T

substituting values!

336\times 10^{3}\times 2= 4200\times m'\times 100

672\times 10^{3} = 420\times 10^{3}\times m'

m' = \frac{672}{420}

m' = 1.6kg...

hence , the mass of water poured into an hole in ice block is 1.6kg!!
