A bullet is moving with a speed of 10 m/s hits a wooden plank . The bullet stopped when it penetrated the plank 2cm deep. Calculate the reatardation of the bullet?

Solution :-
Initial velocity ( u ) = 10 m/s
Since the the bullet comes to rest after hitting the wooden plank,
Final velecity ( v ) = 0 m/s
Displace of the bullet = 2 cm = 2 * 1/100 m = 0.02 m
[ Since 1 cm = 1/100 m ]
Let the acceleration of the bullet be 'a' m/s²
Using third eqation of motion
⇒ v² - u² = 2as
⇒ 0² - 10² = 2( a )( 0.02 )
⇒ 0 - 100 = 0.04a
⇒ - 100/0.04 = a
⇒ - 10000/4 = a
⇒ - 2500 = a
⇒ a = - 2500
Retardation = - a = - ( - 2500 ) = 2500 m/s²
Hence, the retardation of the bullet is 2500 m/s².
