Subsidiary Alliance was another annexation policy of the British. It was introduced by Lord Wellesley the Governor General of Bengal.

This alliance was also known as non - intervention policy.

Under it the ruler had to follow the following things :

  • The ruler would be protected by the company against foreign attacks but the ruler had to pay for it. He had to look after the British army and it's expenses.
  • If the ruler failed to pay for the expenses ; some part of his territory would be annexed .
  • The ruler cannot form an alliance with another foreign power.
  • A British Resident was placed in the court ; who interfered in all matters of the state.
  • Hence the rulers started to feel like they have lost their powers.

States like:\sf\red {Mysore , Awadh ,Scindhiya , Peshwa ,etc } were taken under the Subsidiary Alliance.
