x + 2y = 7.  \: putting \: \:  \: x = 7 - 2y  \: in \:  \\ 2nd  \: equation\: \\  \\  - 2x + y = 4

 - 2(7 - 2y) + y = 4 \\  - 14 + 4y + y = 4 \\ 5y = 18 \\ y =  \frac{18}{5}

x = 7 - 2y = 7 - 2 \times  \frac{18}{5}

x =  \frac{35 - 36}{5}  =  \frac{ - 1}{5}
