Answer:

x = 19/4 , y = 11/4

Solution:

The given equations are ;

x + 3y = 13 -----(1)

3x + y = 17 ------(2)

Eq-(1) can be rewritten as ;

x = 13 - 3y --------(3)

Now,

Putting x = 13 - 3y in eq-(2) , we get ;

=> 3x + y = 17

=> 3(13 - 3y) + y = 17

=> 39 - 9y + y = 17

=> -9y + y = 17 - 39

=> -8y = - 22

=> y = -22/-8

=> y = 11/4

Now,

Putting y = 11/4 in eq-(3) , we have ;

=> x = 13 - 3y

=> x = 13 - 3•(11/4)

=> x = 13 - 33/4

=> x = (52 - 33)/4

=> x = 19/4

Hence,

x = 19/4 , y = 11/4
