• Let x = M and \dfrac{1}{y} = N

M + 6N = 6

\implies M = 6 - 6N _________ (eq 1)

3M - 8N = 5

\implies 3(6 - 6N) - 8N = 5 [From (eq 1)]

\implies 18 - 18N - 8N = 5

\implies - 26N = 5 - 18

\implies 26N = 13

\implies N = \dfrac{ { \cancel{13}}^{1} }{ { \cancel{26}}^{2} }

\implies N = \dfrac{1}{2}

• Put value of N in (eq 1)

\implies M = 6 - 6 × \dfrac{1}{2}

\implies M = \dfrac{12\:-\:6}{2}

\implies M = \dfrac{6}{2}

\implies M = 3

______________________________

M = x = 3

N = \dfrac{1}{y} = \dfrac{1}{2}

y = 2
