Some divers uncover the sunken shipwreck of a small boat, the HMS Pinafore. Radio logs
from the time of the incident indicate the boat sent an SOS signal 4.50 ℎ after leaving port.
The boat’s logs are still intact, and indicate that it made the following movements, and
maintained a constant speed for the whole trip:
(i) From port, it travelled 85.0 ሾሿ.
(ii) It then turned and travelled 148 ሾ65°ሿ.
(iii) Lastly, the Pinafore travelled 92.0 ሾ25°ሿ before coming to a stop, and sinking.
a) Sketch a set of displacement vectors indicating the boat’s movement during each step
of its trip, and a resultant vector indicating it’s net displacement from port.
b) Determine the boat’s displacement from port at the time it sunk, and its average
velocity throughout the trip.
c) Determine the boat’s speed (recall: the boat only changed direction, never speed).
