first we have to understand the full meaning of the word shamshan ghat
It has two parts. Shamshan or Shamshaan (which means (Shav+shaant) i.e. the place where the shav or the body of a deceased person is put to rest (attain shaanti or eternal rest) then comes ghaat, which means the shores or banks of a water body, essentially a river that ultimately joins the sea. So Shamshaan ghat is a place where (as per Hindu rites) bodies of the deceased are put to rest (by consigning it to flames), with (most importantly) the ashes of the deceased are immersed in the river for the ashes to ultimately flow with the river and join the sea.
So Shamshaan Ghaat is translated as a cremation ground which is not the exact meaning, as the “ground” may or may not be located on the banks of a river, but as mostly cremation is performed on the banks of a river, the description cremation ground stuck. Of course, in cases where a person has to be cremated but there is no river around to immediately immerse the ashes (these are collected after they cool down, mostly the next morning), put in a mud pot or copper vessel and taken to a major river or the sea itself and immersed.
So the standard meaning of Shamshaan Ghaat is a cremation ground.
