Some interesting facts that you must know about Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus died 476 years ago on September 22, 1539 at the age of 70. He was known for his political, social and spiritual beliefs which were based on love, equality, fraternity and virtue.
● Guru Nanak Dev ji was born on 15 April, 1469 at Talvandi.
● He was the founder of Sikh religion and became the first Sikh Guru.
● He began travelling around across South Asia and middle east in order to spread his teachings and expand Sikhism.
● His teachings are preserved in 974 hymns which are now known as 'Guru Granth Sahib'.
● He said that everyone can unite with god by meditation and that tgere's only one God. He also said that rituals and priests are not required to reach to the god.
● He emphasised to practice repeatation of name of God ( Nam-Japna ) in order to feel the presence of God.
● He is one of the most important religious figures to have contributed to women empowerment in India. He appealed his followers to respect women and treat them equally.
● He died in Kartarpur on September 22, 1539.
