(i) Due to refraction, only the rods stuck in a glass or beaker. The pencil appears to be broken (bent).

(ii) The density of different layers of the atmosphere changes due to heat change in the night, due to which the refractive index of the air varies. For this reason the wires seem to blink because the continuous refraction of light coming from them remains. The moon makes bigger angles on the eye than the stars. So it does not seem to blink.

(iii) Upstream from the surface, the refractive index of the air decreases and the reflux of light continues to be repeated, resulting in sunrise and sunset, even when the sun is below the horizon.

(iv) Refractive index of air near the surface is high and as it goes up, it decreases. That is why the air flying in the sun, the stars, and the height in the sky appears higher than its actual position.

(v) Due to the refraction of light on the surface of the water, the depth of the pond appears less than its actual depth.
