Usually, the intermolecular spaces in solid, liquid and gas vary.

They are in the order of increasing intercellular spaces (i.e.) in a solid molecules are tightly packed, liquid has slightly higher intermolecular space than solid whereas gases have very high intermolecular space.

Hence some solids diffuse only in gases because they need a high free flowing intermolecular space for their diffusion
