I remember when my nieces got into this series. I was surprised because one of my nieces is a definite pull teeth-maybe-will-read-side-of-cereal-box kind of gal. So I borrowed the first one. Blah. Then I read the Host. Wow, really loved that one.

It was Meyer’s writing style, somewhere along the way it improved. Similar to the HP books where each book became better and better stylistically. I enjoyed Breaking Dawn. Granted this is not Proulx but it’s meant to be YA so it is supposed to be a little less high art, and it does not have the complicated dynamics that one expects in a more mature novel. I then went out and purchased the Short Life of Bree Tanner. Wow. It informs the series, it steps back and let’s us enter it through a portal that is Bree Tanner. Like Being John Malkovich, we are inserted into the mind of the characters via a minor character, who could be us.

It sharpens the debate on female agency. It’s interesting because the perspective of the writer is from a mormon background, it interjects ideas that can be viewed from a less emotional perspective. The Esme thread was disturbing, kinda interesting, kinda ewww. But it explores a concept of mixed heritage, alliances, shifting dynamics, and represents symbolically a microcosm that is worthwhile exploring from afar.

I personally loved it. But I kinda like vampire novels. I also like YA novels.

Perusing the posts, I realize that the movies are being reviewed as well. I enjoyed the movies. I think the script, actors, and cgi were well done. It’s not as good as the books, but it was not a fail like The Host movie was for the book. I preferred the way Breaking Dawn had the battle go down, and the concepts threading through it better than the movie. I felt that was unfortunate. I do think the battle scenes were exciting in the movie, but the energy and force of Bella in Breaking Dawn the book was more intense and exciting.

Kristen Stewart is a fine actress, it’s difficult to play a role that is not as complex as Stewart is. Bella is a young woman that still has years to go to become a more complex and psychologically interesting character. Stewart’s portrayal of Bella was spot on and gave the fictional woman a deeper understanding. The book did drag a bit on all of Bella’s angst, so it was refreshing not to see as much of the angst on the big screen.
