valency is the combining capacity of an element. it determines the no.of atoms an element can combine to.

for example : in HCl, the valency of H is 1 as it combines with 1 Cl atom and vice versa.

Metals loose electrons from their valence shell so as to form positively charged ions such that the charge on the ion is equal to its electropositive valency. In such a situation the element exhibits more than one valency (variable valency).
