Cells of the Nervous tissue are specially designed to react to the stimuli (environmental change that causes an organism to response). The brain, spinal cord and nerves are made of nervous tissue. Cells of Nervous tissue are nerve cells (neurons) and glial cells.
Nerve cells consists of a cell body and a long thin hair like part. called as Axon. The cell body has small hair like projection called as dendrites. The end of neurons are connected to the dendrites of another neuron and this connection is called as . A neuron can grow upto 1 metre.
Glial cells are not too popular. There are 10 to 50 times more glial cells then the neurons. However these glial cells need neurons for their work. Their function is to :-
1) provide nutrients to nerve cells
2) Protect the neuron from Pathogens.
