Higher organisms, such as plants and animals perform aerobic respiration (in the presence of oxygen) to generate energy. However, anaerobic respiration (in the absence of oxygen) is also performed by these organisms when their cells lack of oxygen.  

In the absence or scarcity of oxygen, energy need of cells cannot be fulfilled as aerobic respiration needs oxygen. So, the cells shift to anaerobic respiration to provide required energy to the cells to perform various function.
